FKC, in a joint venture, was responsible for the structural design of the North River water treatm ent plant. This unique facility, a 220 mgd secondary sewage treatment plant, designed to treat half of Manhattan's sewage, is built atop a caisson and pile-supported structural platform over the Hudson river in Harlem, just south of the George Washington Bridge. The 30 acre roof that is constructed of post-tensioned precast concrete slabs, supports a community park and recreation area that includes a stadium, swimming pool, splaying fields, restaurants, and other recreational facilities. This is one of the largest post-tensioned concrete projects in the USA. This project has received the Presidential Federal Design Achievement Award from the National Endowment For the Arts, and the City Club of New York Albert S. Bard Award of Merit in Architectural and Urban Design.
