FKC investigated the structural integrity of the Wards Island digester tanks, and performed a feasibility study whether the existing concrete tanks could be operated under future thermophilic conditions (135° F). The digester tanks were operated under mesophilic conditions (90° F). There are six digester tanks and two gas extractor tanks. FKC performed a condition survey and testing of the reinforced concrete structures including chemical and petrographic examination. Impact-Echo testing was conducted in order to determine possible concrete delaminations or voids. FKC performed analytical and finite element studies to investigate the effects of temperature changes and the stress levels of the dome structures.
