This new retail facility was partially constructed over a landfill area. Soon after construction, large areas of the floor slab started to subside. In a period of approximately five years after construction the concrete slab on grade settled approximately 16 to 18 inches. FKC was retained to investigate the causes and the rate of settlement, as well as the effects on the superstructure structural frame. FKC installed settlement plate monitoring wells (see photograph) in order to determine the rate of settlement. Soil samples were retrieved and examined. The structural frame, consisting of steel beams and columns and open web joist, was evaluated, taking into consideration the differential settlement between the columns. FKC designed temporary repair details, and prepared project specifications for long-term repairs. |
