This 30 year old two story retail facility is part of a major shopping center. The building columns are supported on pile foundations, while the original first floor slab is a five inch thick concrete slab on grade. Over the years, the soil underneath the slab on grade had subsided and the floor slab deflected gradually. FKC was retained to evaluate the floor slab settlement. Impact-Echo testing of the slab revealed variable slab thickness. Measurements of the slab thickness at the middle of a bay indicated thickness in excess of 15 inches. Our structural analysis and soil condition evaluation indicated that the floor slabs would continue to settle. FKC recommended the removal and replacement of the existing slab on grade with a new framed concrete slab supported on new drilled mini pile foundation. FKC prepared drawings and specifications for the repairs.
