The expansion joints at the plaza level of this office complex exhibited extensive deterioration in a relatively short time (about five years) after construction. FKC investigated the causes for the premature expansion joint failure and issued a report on the findings, conclusions, and recommendations. Due to the expansion joint failure and water penetration, the metal deck and slab had deteriorated and several supporting steel beams had extensively corroded. FKC used ultrasonic testing to determine the extent of beam corrosion, and evaluated the loss of beam strength.
FKC designed repair details, prepared design drawings and specifications, and performed construction administration services.
